Abstract

Le molte iscrizioni ritrovate nel Seicento nell'area di San Saturnino, a lungo considerate
false, erano per lo più di carattere funerario. Quella che qui si ripropone, e che anche il Mommsen ritenne
autentica, è invece una dedica tracciata su una base di statua che fu ritrovata murata nel settore
meridionale della struttura. Nel Seicento però ne fu travisata l'interpretazione, attribuendo al Claudius
dedicante l'intento di aver "prudentemente" nascosto la sepoltura di Saturnino.

The numerous funeral inscriptions that were found in the seventeenth century in the San
Saturnino area have been considered to be false for a long time, were mostly of funerary character. The
one discussed herein, which was considered authentic by Mommsen, is indeed a base of a statue that
was found embedded in the southern side of the structure. In the seventeenth century, however, the
inscription was erroneously interpreted, and the intention to have hidden "prudently" the burial of
Saturninus was attributed to devoting Claudius.
